Michael H. Covert, F.A.C.H.E., came to Palomar Health as President and Chief Executive Officer in January 2003. He has more than 43 years experience in health care administration.

His previous positions have included President and CEO of Sarasota Memorial Health Care System from 1992 to 2000; acting Director of the Public Health Department, Wichita, Kansas; Executive Director of the Ohio State University of Hospitals, Columbus, Ohio; Chief Operating Officer at St. Francis Regional Medical Center, Wichita, Kansas; and Senior Vice President of Physicians Corporation of America, Wichita, Kansas. Covert served as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C., one of the 10 busiest hospitals in the United States and the largest in the DC/Maryland area, prior to joining the Palomar Health System.

Covert is a past member of the American Hospital Association Health Systems Governing Council and has served as the Chair of the Hospital Association of San Diego and Imperial Counties and presently as a member of the California Hospital and Health Systems Board. He has been a member of the Executive Committee of the California Hospital Association and will become Chair-elect in 2014, Regent for Western Florida of the American College of Health Care Executives; 1999 Chair of the Board of the Association of Community Hospitals and Health Systems of Florida; and Chair of the Academic Advisory Council for the University of South Florida, Sarasota Campus. He also held faculty appointments at the Washington University and Ohio State University Schools of Medicine. In 2010 he completed a three-year term as the ACHE Regent for San Diego and Imperial Counties in California. He currently serves as the Vice-Chair of the Board for the University of Arizona Health
Network.

Previously, Covert was a member of the American Hospital Association Regional Policy Board; past Chair of the Washington University School of Medicine Health Administration Program Alumni Board; 1995-1996 Chair of the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce and was the 1998-1999 Chair of the Board for the United Way of Sarasota County.

Additionally, he served as the Chair of the Accreditation Commission on Education for Health Services Administration (CAHME), which was responsible for accrediting all graduate programs in health administration in the United States and Canada. Covert was a member of the VHA-Southeast Board of Directors and Executive Committee and presently serves as the Chair of the VHA West Coast Board and Executive Committee. Covert was honored by the Council of Ethical Organizations in Washington, D.C. in 2007 as the Health Ethics Trust Fellow of the Year for outstanding leadership in the areas of ethics and compliance. He was only the second health care leader to receive this prestigious award at that time. He was one named one of 2009’s Most Admired CEO honorees by San Diego Business Journal.

Covert received a bachelor's degree in business administration and a master's degree in health administration from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri and is a Fellow in the American College of Health Care Executives.

Covert has served on a number of ACHE committees, the Frontiers Editorial Board and has spoken at the ACHE Congress for the past twelve years. He has published several articles on senior leadership for various ACHE publications and received the ACHE Western Florida, San Diego and Imperial Counties Senior-Level Healthcare Executives Awards.
