Automated Teller Machines (ATM)

At Palomar Health Downtown Campus, the ATM is located on the lobby level near the public phones.

Cell Phone Usage

Due to the potential risk to medical equipment, Palomar Health restricts the use of wireless communication devices. The use of cellular phones by patients and visitors is permitted only outside of the patient’s room and away from other patients and visitors.

Flowers and Newspapers

Volunteers deliver flowers from your well-wishers to your room. Newspapers may be purchased at the entrance to the hospital. Please check with individual nurses’ stations as flowers are not permitted in some patient care areas.

Gift Shop

For the safety of our patients, visitors should check with the nurse before bringing gifts of food or drink to patients. On the Intensive Care Unit, please check with the unit regarding any gifts for patients. To prevent allergic reactions, latex balloons are not permitted in the hospitals. We are happy to deliver items and flowers to patient rooms. Please note that flowers are not allowed in the ICU, but mylar balloons and gift items are permitted.

Located on the lobby level of both hospitals, the gift shops offer reading and writing materials, candy, flowers, unique gifts and other personal-care items. Hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The gift shops are staffed by volunteers and employees and a portion of the revenues are utilized to support patient-care needs. As with any service, time may vary depending on the availability of volunteers. Please call to ensure your gift shop is open. Lost and Found

If you lose an item during your hospital stay, our security department is here to assist you. Call Palomar Health Downtown Campus Security at 3173.

Mail

Due to short hospital stays, many patients are already home before mail can be delivered. To avoid this situation, it is recommended that you have cards and letters sent to your home and brought in by a friend or family member. However, any mail sent to you at our facilities will be brought to your room. Volunteers deliver letters and packages for patients each morning. Letters and parcels that arrive after you have been discharged are forwarded to your home. Stamps and stationery may be purchased in the gift shop. If you have outgoing mail, it can be given to a volunteer to mail.

Personal Items

Please let your nurse know if you wear dentures, glasses or a hearing aid, and pay special attention to keeping these items with you at all times. We cannot assume responsibility for replacement of personal belongings.

Patients are asked not to bring personal items to the hospital. We ask patients to bring only those items necessary for personal care. If a valuable personal item is brought in, a family member should take it home. If this is not possible, the item should be deposited in the hospital safe. You will be given a written receipt for all deposited items, which must be presented when you withdraw them. The hospital does not accept responsibility for personal items unless they are deposited in the safe.

Smoking Policy

Palomar Health Downtown Campus is a non-smoking facility. Smoking is not allowed anywhere on campus.

Visiting Guidelines

In order to assure the safety and health of both our patients and visitors, we ask that the following guidelines be observed:

  • For the health of our patients, staff, and visitors, Palomar Health is a smoke-free environment and smoking is not permitted anywhere on campus.
  • For health reasons, visitors must dress appropriately and wear shirts and shoes.
  • Duration of visits, number of visits and ages of visitors may be limited by the nursing staff consistent with the level of care the patient requires.
  • In the best interest of our patients’ health, people with a cold, sore throat or any contagious disease are requested not to visit patients.
  • Because patients are recovering from illness or surgery, visits should be kept short.
  • Visitors should maintain a quiet environment and avoid unnecessary noise.
  • For privacy reasons, visitors may be asked to leave the room during tests or treatments or when the doctor or nurse needs to see the patient.
  • For safety reasons, children must be supervised by a parent or other adult at all times.

Visiting Hours

At Palomar Health, we recognize that family and friends are vital in the healing process. Because our mission is to promote a comfortable and healing environment, our visiting hours are flexible and open on most units. Due to the nature of the treatment, there are certain units where visitation may be restricted.

Waiting Areas

There are specially designated lounge areas for visitors on each patient floor and on the main floor in the lobby. Specific waiting areas have been designated for families of patients in the Critical Care Units, the Emergency Department and Surgery.

Wheelchairs

Wheelchairs are available on all nursing units. Because seating yourself and standing up without assistance may be hazardous, please ask for help from a member of the hospital staff.
