Evidence-Based Design

From the moment patients and visitors step into the new Palomar Medical Center, they will experience a world-class facility whose theme embodies the notion that nature promotes a sense of calm and healing.

The energy-saving, innovative wavy green roof features native drought-resistant vegetation.  Soothing seafoam green glass intersected with sand-colored tile comprises one wall of the Garden Terrace Café, one of the hospital’s restaurants. The main lobby, designed by people experienced in creating successful cruise ship environments, reflects the openness of the three-story main entrance.

Innovative Design

One of the strategic goals in building the new Palomar Medical Center was to build a facility that could easily adapt to future technologies and innovations, despite not knowing exactly what advances the future may bring. The advanced surgery and procedures department serves as an example of this forward-thinking philosophy. The structural steel truss system creates an obstruction-free floor area that will enable to space to be quickly and less-expensively changed in the future to create larger or smaller operating rooms as needed.

Going Green to Promote Healing and Reduce Consumption

Palomar Health made an early commitment to incorporating sustainable design solutions to advance healing, safety and satisfaction. Encompassing 21st-century technologies makes the new Palomar Medical Center an interconnected, organic building, according to award-winning design firm CO Architects. Significant evidence-based research has demonstrated the positive healing benefits of promoting stronger connections to nature, and CO Architects developed solutions that are expected to reduce energy consumption by approximately 25 percent.

Groundbreaking Approach to Construction

Construction of the $956 million project began in December 2007 with a revolutionary 3-D design method called BIM – building information modeling. This replaced traditional flat drawings and thousands of pages of blueprints. The BIM model provides a view into each wall and above each ceiling showing exactly where pipes, ducts and electrical conduits are located.
