Palomar Health Downtown Campus, Behavioral Health Unit (BHU)

Our 25-bed inpatient unit provides comprehensive psychiatric recovery-based treatment. The unit provides single-private rooms and a safe, structured, and secured environment. The unit offers two therapy programs, one for adults 18 years and older and an older adult program to meet the needs of our community. 

Inpatient Adult Program
Our program is dedicated to diagnosing and treating acutely ill adult patients 18 years or older. Patients will experience a structured environment and intensive treatment that emphasizes safety, stabilization, encouragement, and support. We treat individuals who are experiencing acute depression, suicidal thoughts, thoughts to harm others, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and schizophrenia.

  • Psychiatric intensive care and crisis stabilization
  • Multi-disciplinary assessment and treatment
  • Voluntary and involuntary treatment
  • Detoxification for dually-diagnosed patients and/or addiction education
  • Individual and group psychotherapy
  • Medication management
  • Supportive group, individual and milieu therapy
  • Individual and group psychotherapy
  • Recreation therapy, art therapy, music therapy and pet therapy
  • Individualized treatment plans
  • Comprehensive discharge planning and aftercare
  • The Joint Commission accreditation
  • Training site for student nurses and psychology interns
  •  Family support and education


NEW! Inpatient Older Adult Program
This program is dedicated to providing treatment for the older adult who experiences acute depression, severe anxiety, bipolar disorder or panic disorder. Treatment involves structured therapy combined with understanding, support and encouragement. The older adult program incorporates all of the disciplines and therapies offered to the general adult population; however, is tailored to the specific needs of the older adult.
