The private home care industry has grown significantly in recent years and it seems there are new agencies popping up every day. However, custodial home care is not regulated by the State, so it is up to the consumer to know the facts when choosing an agency. Since there is a wide range in quality of home care agencies, it is important for you to ask the right questions.

  • Does your agency do background checks on your employees?
    Non-licensed agencies are not required to do background checks. It is important to choose an agency that does background checks on every employee.
  • Does your agency do drug screening on every employee?
    Choose an agency that does drug screenings on every employee.
  • Are your employees TB tested?
    TB testing is important to keep you and your family safe and healthy.
  • Do you conduct regular health screenings for every staff member?
    Regular health screenings should be conducted on every staff member.
  • Are your caregivers employees or subcontractors?
    Companies that subcontract staff do not pay state or federal taxes and do not conduct health screenings or supervise the staff. Choose an agency whose staff are employees of the agency.
  • What are the services your agency provides?
    Make sure that the agency you choose provides all of the services your family will need. For example, transportation, rehabilitation services, access to Case Managers or Social Workers.
  • What are your rates?
    Most quality agencies' rates are comparable. An agency with rates outside of the average range should be questioned (they could be operating out of their home).
  • Do you bill my long-term care insurance?
    Many agencies will not bill your insurance. Choose an agency that offers this service if you have long-term care insurance.
  • Do you pay state and federal taxes on your employees?
    Choose an agency that assumes responsibility for all payroll deductions.
  • Do you carry malpractice insurance?
    You could be responsible for any injury that occurs in your home, if your agency does not insure its employees.
