Beach Books

16. July 2010

The low clouds are gone and the heat is on. It’s summer in San Diego! Time to hit the beach for a little relaxation and fun in the sun. So pack your sunscreen, shades, bocce ball and beach chair. And whatever you do, don’t forget a beach BOOK! Nothing too heavy, just a pleasant read to help you relax and escape into a world of romance, adventure, inspiration or intrigue.

Now, if you’re like me, it’s hard to relax when you don’t know where to start. So many books, so little time! It can be overwhelming. So this summer I’m going to keep it simple. One classic novel. One inspirational read, and at least two… maybe three, of my favorite political thrillers by Daniel Silva.

I’m already halfway through “A Lineage of Grace” and can hardly put it down! Francine Rivers’ look at ‘five unlikely women who have changed eternity’ has already changed the way I view several of the Bible’s most interesting women.

For a fun thrill ride, I’ve got two Daniel Silva paperbacks ready to go. There are thirteen. I’m on #6, “The English Assassin.” (Art merchant and spy, Gabriel Allon is like Jack Bauer on steroids!) They say it’s best if you read them in order… so I’ve got “The Confessor” standing by. You can get the entire list online.

With any luck, I’ll wrap up summer’s “dog days” with “The Great Gatsby.” by F. Scott Fitzgerald. After wading through “Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina,” last year, I’m looking forward to a classic piece of American literature this time around!

I’d love to know what you’re reading. What’s on top of your “must read” list? If you need a few ideas, www.amazon.com has a list of great summer beach books. They highly recommend James Patterson’s latest mystery novel, “Beach Road.” There’s also a big thumbs-up for “Beach Music: A Novel,” Pat Conroy’s latest. Might have to check it out myself. I love Conroy. (“Prince of Tides” is still my favorite novel ever!)

Oprah’s also in the know when it comes to good reading. Her list of “26 Favorite Books of the Summer” is out. You can check it out on-line or in the July issue of “O…The Oprah Magazine.” “Kings of the Earth,” a historical novel by Jon Clinch looks good and gets rave reviews. She even includes a list of the top teen books.

So make your list and get started! Summer’s the time to take a break and fill your soul… with a little help from a good book.
