Pelvic Floor

Millions of Americans suffer from pelvic floor dysfunction. Yet for most, the disease goes unidentified and untreated. In fact, 1 out of every 5 Americans suffer from some type of pelvic floor dysfunction in their lifetime. And, it’s not just a women’s disorder – men can have pelvic floor dysfunction too.

Pelvic floor disorders include problems that occur when pelvic muscles are too weak, too tight, or when there is an impairment to the lower back or hips. Problems can include incontinence, pelvic pain or painful intercourse.

The pelvic floor is made up of muscles and other tissues that form a sling from the pubic bone to the tailbone. They assist in supporting the abdominal and pelvic organs and help to control bladder, bowel and sexual activity.

Physical therapy incorporates exercises and biofeedback to retrain the muscles and improve their strength and your awareness, giving you more control and less pain.

Treatment may include:

• Joint mobilization • Biofeedback
• Soft tissue mobilization • Electrical stimulation
• Myofacial and trigger point release • Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)
• Connective tissue manipulation • Heat and cold therapy
• Deep tissue massage

Incontinence

While there can be many causes of incontinence, physical therapy focuses on treating the musculoskeletal components of this condition. Physical therapy can help you retrain the bladder and surrounding muscles. We use biofeedback, which provides instantaneous feedback regarding muscle function to increase self-regulation, awareness and control.

Pelvic Pain & Painful Intercourse

Weakness of pelvic floor muscles, decreased blood flow and joint dysfunction can be contributing factors to painful intercourse. Physical therapy can treat this pain through muscle re-education, joint mobilizations, improving blood flow and therapeutic exercises.
