David Tam, M.D.
David Tam, MD, MBA, FACHE has been the the Chief Administrative Officer of Pomerado Hospital for more than 5 years and was receintly named Vice President, Pomerado Hospital and Palomar Health Downtown Campus. He came to Palomar Health after a successful 24-year career in the United States Navy as a pediatric subspecialist and a healthcare executive, retiring with the rank of Captain (O-6). At the time of his retirement, Dr. Tam served as the Chief Operating Officer for the Western Region of Tricare - the military's health insurance program covering 2.9 million lives in 21 states. Prior to that, he was the Deputy Commander, Chief Operating and Strategy Officer for Naval Medical Center, San Diego - the Department of Defense's largest tertiary medical training program with over 23 residencies.
Dr. Tam completed a Pediatric Residency in Oakland, California, and a Child Neurology residency at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Virginia. He has practiced in both states, and has served as adjunct clinical faculty at several major medical schools. Dr. Tam has written more than 25 peer reviewed scientific articles and was principal investigator for several multi-center research studies.
Since his arrival at Palomar Health, Dr. Tamhas continued to take on more system level administrative responsibilities. He is accountable for all facilities development and management, and was responsible for the construction of the new $956 million Palomar Medical Center, which opened in 2012 as the award winning "hospital of the future." Dr. Tam also has system responsibilities for Security, Housekeeping and Environmental Services, Food and Nutritional Services, and Pharmaceutical Services. He is also accountable for all Supply Chain Services.
In 2012, Dr. Tam was also named Palomar Health's Chief Marketing and Communications Officer. His duties in this added capacity included developing a branding and marketing strategy for the health system, as well as governmental and legislative relations.
Dr. Tam is an active Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, and has been a member of the Regents Advisory Council for the past three years. He is a member of the national board of the American Hospital Association's Institute for Diversity, and an alternate delegate to Region 9 Policy Board of the AHA. He serves on the editorial boards of two peer reviewed journals, and is also an appointed trustee to the Poway Regional Oversight Board.
