One Step at a Time

03. February 2010

February is Heart Health month – a great time to get going! Only one month into the New Year and not too late to make good on that resolution to move more… one step at a time! It’s easy. Nothing fancy. No equipment needed. Just a good pair of walking or running shoes. Here’s how you make it fun. Get out there a couple of days a week on your own, then book one “destination” walk or run every weekend. Alone or with a friend… in San Diego, your options are endless. Here are my favorites:

  1. The Strand in Coronado. Park at Glorietta Bay Park. Use the bike path. Head north or south! It’s super-flat!
  2. Mission Bay Park. Tons of parking! Include a lap around Fiesta Island and you can bump up your mileage in a hurry!
  3. The Embarcadero. There’s public parking near the Midway Museum. An incredible water view all the way to Harbor Island and back!
  4. Lake Murray. Perfect east county location. Safe and scenic. 5 miles around the lake.
  5. Miramar Lake. Wide, beautifully paved 5-mile course. Million dollar view of the lake!
  6. Pacific Beach. From the pier to the jetty at Mission Beach. If the tide’s in, run along the boardwalk.
  7. Lake Poway. For one of the most beautiful hikes in the county, head north! This trail is in Poway, but you will feel like you’re a world away.
  8. The La Jolla Coast. Park at the Cove and follow the coastline. Rolling hills. Spectacular views!

    If you’re looking for a little altitude…..
  9. Cowles Mountain in Mission Trails Park. See if you can shave 30 seconds off your time each trek. It’s a challenge!
  10. Torrey Pines trails. Great with a friend. Breathtaking vistas.

Then, to keep the momentum going, set a goal. Check out www.raceplace.com and pick out a walk or run in the coming months you’d like to train for. You can walk a mile or run a marathon! Note: If you’d like to complete a marathon in 2010 contact the Leukemia Society’s “Team in Training.” (www.teamintraining.org) They’ll set you up with training schedules and running groups to help you achieve your goal.

Have fun!
