Cancer Genetic Counseling
Genetic counseling can help both those diagnosed with cancer and those who have not had cancer. It can be a valuable tool to aid in prevention, early detection, and improved cancer management.
For those diagnosed with cancer: Genetic counseling can determine if genetic testing is recommended to help guide your treatment and screenings. It can also assess your relatives’ risk to develop cancer.
For those not diagnosed with cancer: If you have a significant family history of cancer, genetic counseling can help to assess your cancer risk, develop a personalized management and screening plan, and determine if genetic testing is an option for you.
Our board-certified genetic counselor will meet with you for an initial consultation to review your personal and family medical history in detail, perform an assessment to determine your risk of developing cancer (or future cancers, if already diagnosed), and review the details of genetic testing, if appropriate. The comprehensive consultation includes discussing your personalized screening and treatment recommendations based on the risk assessment and/or genetic test results, and referrals to other healthcare professionals as needed. You will be provided with a report summarizing this information, as well as any physicians that you wish to have a copy.

For breast patients, our genetic counselor works as part of a multidisciplinary team, including a breast surgeon, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, and nurse navigators to provide the most comprehensive care. Women and men with a strong personal and/or family history of other types of cancer, including colon, pancreatic, ovarian, uterine, and melanoma, are also encouraged to call for a consultation.
