About Surgical Wounds
When a surgical wound reopens after surgery, it is called wound dehiscence. Wound dehiscence can occur 7 to 10 days post surgery. A surgical wound that reopens carries a high risk of infection and can lead to mortality if left untreated. Reopening of surgical wounds are often associated with diabetes, increased age, obesity, infection, or injury to the wound area after closure.
What to Do
- Inform your surgeon or physician about the reopening of your surgical wound.
- You may also call the Wound Care Center to make an appointment for consultation.
Treatment is covered by PPO's, Medicare, and most HMO's at the Wound Care Centers.
