Bargaining Update: Contract Negotiations for CNA and CHEU

Palomar Health’s mission is to heal, comfort, and promote health in the communities we serve.  Our vision is to be the health system of choice for patients, physicians, and employees, recognized nationally for the highest quality of clinical care and access to comprehensive services.  Palomar Health’s values of compassion, integrity, teamwork, excellence, service, and trust support our mission and vision.

Palomar Health’s nurses and other healthcare employees are vital to achieving our mission and vision, and share our common principles.  We value our registered nurses and caregivers and appreciate their service and dedication.

Palomar Health’s current contracts with the California Nurses Association (CNA) and the Caregivers and Healthcare Employees Union (CHEU) expire May 31, 2017. Palomar Health, CNA, and CHEU are scheduled to meet later this week to begin negotiating new contracts.

Why are Palomar Health, CNA and CHEU meeting to negotiate new contracts?
If you are represented by a union, your wages, benefits, and other terms of employment must be negotiated between Palomar Health and the union.  These terms are formally outlined in a collective bargaining agreement. Under state law, Palomar Health is prohibited from bypassing a union and dealing directly with represented employees in connection with terms and conditions of their employment.

How will the contracts be negotiated?
Representatives from Palomar Health and the unions (“bargaining teams”) will meet to negotiate the terms of the agreements. During these negotiations, each side discusses contract-related issues and presents proposals and counter proposals. State law requires that Palomar Health and the unions engage in good-faith negotiations to try to resolve any differences and work toward reaching agreement.

Palomar Health will negotiate in a professional, thoughtful and efficient manner at the bargaining table.  We look forward to working collaboratively with CNA and CHEU to achieve fair contracts that address our mutual concerns and interests.

The first scheduled bargaining dates are:
CNA:  March 16, March 23         CHEU:  March 17, March 24

We will provide you with factually accurate reporting of the status of negotiations on a regular basis.
