Palomar Health Announces New Emergency Care Provider

Palomar Health announced today they have reached an understanding with Emergent Medical Associates (EMA) and Benchmark to provide emergency physicians, hospitalists, intensivists and related support personnel for Palomar Medical Centers in Escondido and Poway beginning in August 2021. The proposed contract is for three years. EMA will replace Vituity, who has provided intensivists for the past six years, hospitalists for eight years and emergency physicians for more than 40 years.

EMA has pledged to offer employment to the approximately 100 physicians and 45 other non-employee staff affected by this change. Based on experience, Palomar Health estimates 90-95% of affected physicians and non-employee staff will stay in their current capacities at Palomar Health.

The renewing and replacement of hospital contract providers is a routine process throughout the country as expiring contracts are put to bid through an RFP process. Palomar Health President and CEO Diane Hansen said EMA, a nationally respected emergency care provider, was selected through a competitive process because they are most aligned with Palomar Health’s strategic goals moving forward.

“Our community and patients expect us to be good stewards of our resources,” Hansen said. “EMA’s proposal allows us to retain all our staff, plus reinvest saved resources to upgrade patient care.”

Specifically with the achieved savings, the hospital system will purchase three new CT scanners, a new MRI machine and make further investments in service lines like cardiology, women’s services and orthopedics.

In the past couple of years, Palomar Health has renewed or replaced contracts for psychiatry services, perinatology, the Outpatient Center at Poway and most recently Kaiser Permanente.

Finally, patients should be assured the new arrangement does not affect in any way their relationship with their family doctor or specialists.
