Save a Life Through Organ Donation

As our lives are currently consumed with COVID-19, we at Palomar Health didn’t want to forget to honor all those who have donated organs and tissues so that others might live.

April is National Donate Life Month and Palomar Health has traditionally celebrated by hosting a lowering of the Donate Life flag ceremony at the end of the month. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, we are unable to host the event but will celebrate donors, receivers, awaiting donors and registered donors nonetheless.

In 2019, 23 organ donor heroes from Palomar Medical Center Escondido (home to one of the largest Trauma Centers by area in California) helped save the lives of 60 people, more than any hospital in San Diego County. Additionally, 72 tissue donors from Palomar Medical Center Escondido and Poway enhanced the lives of more than 5,000 recipients through the donation of skin, corneas and other tissues.

Palomar Health has long been an advocate for end-of-life patients donating organs and tissues to help save the lives of others and last year, the Lifesharing organization (who administers organ donations) honored Palomar Health nurse, Noelle Lee, with a Certificate of Appreciation for her advocacy work on behalf of organ donations. The selfless act is often therapeutic for the donor’s family.

“Organ donation is healing, not only for transplant recipients, but for the families of organ donors,” said Lifesharing Executive Director Lisa Stocks. “Many of them take great comfort in knowing that their loved one was able to help others. They say it’s a ‘light in the darkness.’”

There are currently more than 2,000 people in the San Diego area in need of a lifesaving organ. You can help by registering online at Donate Life California.
