Critical Care

My journey as a nurse has been long and challenging — gross anatomy lab when I had the flu, dozens of all-nighters, and approximately 8,000 gallons of stale coffee. (To my fellow clinicians, that would be over 32,000 liters).

Today, as a Critical Care Nurse, I apply those hard-earned skills every shift at Palomar Health, the largest public health system in southern California and the only designated Level II Trauma Center in North County San Diego. I work with a dynamic team and supportive leadership some who have been with Palomar Health for more than 20 years.

Even though Palomar Health is one of the largest health care systems, they somehow manage birthday celebrations for their employees. That's just the kind of place this is.

No wonder my 17 "smile muscles" are getting quite a workout these days.

The centerpiece of your healthcare system is the new Palomar Medical Center (PMC). Construction of the 740,000-foot, 11-story facility which opened in 2012. The medial center features 288 private single-patient rooms, 44 emergency and trauma rooms and 11 operating rooms. The 56-acre campus will expand in phases - up to double its current size - to meet the developing needs of this North San Diego County growing community.

As one of the country’s largest hospital construction projects and the first new North County hospital in 30 years, the new campus has already captured the attention of healthcare professionals worldwide for its use of nature, light and space, all designed to speed healing. Among the natural features is our 1.5-acre green roof that sits atop the second floor, lush with drought-resistant vegetation and offering a beautiful view for south-facing patients.
