Lead Sleep Center Technologist
Toni began her career in respiratory care in 1978, working primarily in critical care and pulmonary diagnostics. She joined the Palomar Health Pulmonary Laboratory in 1989. In 1991, Toni transitioned into sleep diagnostics, with an emphasis on breathing-related sleep disorders. Toni is a registered Respiratory Therapist-Sleep Disorder Specialist, Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist and Registered Polysomnographic Technologist.





Medical Director

Dr. Karippot is a Board certified sleep medicine specialist with extensive expertise in early detection, prevention and management of chronic conditions such as obstructive sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, insomnia, nightmares and overall poor quality of sleep.

In addition to serving as Medical Director for the Palomar Health Sleep Center, Dr. Karippot has a private medical practice in Scripps Ranch.

Prior to moving to San Diego in 2010, Dr. Karippot was a full-time faculty member at Penn State University Hershey Medical Center, where he helped to develop a comprehensive sleep medicine and research program.  He also served as the Medical Director for the Medical Center’s Sleep Research & Treatment Center and Restless Leg Syndrome Clinic.

Dr. Karippot is certified by the American Board of Sleep Medicine and the American Board of Medical Specialities.  He is also Board certified in General Psychiatry and Child & Adolescent Psychiatry and is one of the few physicians certified in Behavioral Sleep Medicine.

Dr. Karippot is a fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the American Psychiatric Association.  He is an active member of the California Sleep Society and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

Benjamin Kanter, M.D.

Palomar Health Sleep Center

Medical Director: 1990-2012

Dr.  Benjamin Kanter founded the Sleep Center at Palomar Medical Center in 1990 and served as its Medical Director from 1990- 2012. He has treated patients with sleep apnea since 1990, specializing in those with particularly severe or complex disease. 

In addition to his work with the Sleep Center, Dr. Kanter is the Chief Medical Information Officer for Palomar Health and a member of the executive management team. Dr. Kanter has chaired the Departments of Medicine at both Palomar Medical Center and Pomerado Hospital and is a past-Chief of Staff for Pomerado Hospital. 

Dr. Kanter is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Disease, and received special certification in Critical Care.  He received his Medical degree and Internal Medicine training at Northwestern University in Chicago.  He completed his post-doctoral studies in both Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine at the UCSD Medical Center.

Dr. Kanter is a nationally recognized speaker, and is an acknowledged expert in technological innovation for healthcare.  He has been named one of San Diego’s “Top Doctors” by San Diego Magazine multiple times.

Michael Zupancic, M.D.

Neurologist /
Sleep Medicine Specialist

Dr. Michael Zupancic is a Board certified neurologist and a board certified sleep medicine specialist.  His clinical expertise and interests include sleep apnea, sleep disordered breathing, restless leg syndrome, narcolepsy, insomnia, and parasomnias.

Dr. Zupancic has been practicing sleep medicine in San Diego for 5 years.  Prior to this, he completed his fellowship at the Stanford Sleep Disorders Center and was an assistant professor at the University of Michigan’s Department of Neurology, Sleep Medicine section. 

As a leader in sleep medicine, Dr. Zupancic has presented numerous CME lectures and chaired a discussion group about sleep apnea and stroke at the annual American Academy of Sleep Medicine national meeting.

In addition, he has been the principal investigator of several clinical research trials regarding restless leg syndrome, hypersomnia, and insomnia. Dr. Zupancic has published several articles and book chapters about sleep disordered breathing, insomnia, sleep apnea and stroke.

Brenda Ringel, M.D.


Dr. Brenda Ringel is a Board certified psychiatrist with a specialty in sleep medicine.  Her clinical expertise includes the close connection between psychiatric disorders, such as depression, and sleep disorders.

Dr. Ringel received her Medical degree from the University of Californiaat San Diego.  She completed her Psychiatry residency and Sleep Medicine fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania. In alignment with her dual-specialty, she worked part-time as a clinical faculty member in the University of Pennsylvania Division of Sleep Medicine, and part-time in a community mental health clinic.

Despite a great love for Philadelphia, she could not resist an opportunity to return to sunny San Diego, and relocated in 2006. Dr. Ringel is now employed by the Palomar Center for Behavioral Health.

Dr. Ringel is certified by the American Board of Sleep Medicine and the American Board of Medical Specialties.   She is also certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

Dr. Ringel is a fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the American Psychiatric Association.  She is an active member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the American Psychiatric Association.
