Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)

During coronary artery bypass surgery blood vessels from the legs, arms or chest are sewn — or grafted around — the narrowed or blocked arteries. These grafted blood vessels create a detour or bypass to restore blood flow to the heart muscle.

Heart valve surgery

Valve repair or replacement may be necessary when one or more of the heart valves wear out or become damaged. Many valves can be repaired using complex and specialized techniques. The advantage of valve repair is that the patient’s own valve remains in its natural place in the heart. If a heart valve cannot be repaired, valve replacement may be necessary. The diseased valve is removed and replaced with a tissue valve from humans or animals or a mechanical valve.

Arrhythmia surgery

Surgery may be necessary to correct chaotic irregular heartbeats. Surgical correction is accomplished by interrupting the triggers and abnormal electrical pathways to restore normal heart rhythm. One type of arrhythmia surgery, the Maze procedure, creates one pathway or maze for the electrical activity to pass through. The atrial appendage is also removed to prevent blood clots.

Pulmonary thromboendarterectomy

Blood clots are removed from the pulmonary arteries to restore blood flow to the lung tissue.

Adult congenital defect repairs

Congenital defects are abnormalities of the heart structure that are present at birth. Specialized surgical techniques are used to repair congenital defects.

Septal defect repair

Holes or defects in the wall that separates the right and left side of the heart (septum) are sewn closed or patched with tissue or synthetic material.

Treatment of pericardial disease

Partial or complete removal of the pericardial sac that surrounds the heart muscle.

Vein harvesting

A minimally invasive technique where the vein graft is removed through multiple small incisions along the leg or endoscopically through scopes inserted through small incisions in the leg.
