Management

Kelly York - Palomar Health Downtown Campus

Kelly has worked at Palomar Health since April 2008 and brings exceptional knowledge in food service operations.  Kelly’s background includes more than 20 years in military food service and 10 years in institutional and commercial food service environments.   He has performed roles as a Pastry Chef, Executive Chef and numerous Operations and Project Manager positions.  Kelly is nearing completion of his BSB and CDM and has set his goal of obtaining a Director position in the near future.

Javier Guerrero - Pomerado Hospital

Javier  has worked for Palomar Health since 1995 at various campuses. He has been promoted through the ranks from food service worker ,assistant  cook,  cook, lead, supervisor  and now currently serves as the Operations Manager at Pomerado Hospital. His experience includes retirement facilities, restaurants and hospitals. He received a degree in Criminal Justice Administration and graduated from the Palomar Police Reserve Academy.  Prior to Palomar Health, he worked as a Transit Officer for the North County Transit.

Kara Edwards, RD - Palomar Medical Center

Kara has worked at Palomar Health since 2008.She received her bachelor's degree in Food and Nutrition from San Diego State University and her dietetic  internship at Glendale Memorial Hospital in Glendale, CA.  She has more than 25 years in healthcare/nutrition and has worked in long-term care, residential/retirement facilities,  adult day care and hospice. She currently serves as the Operations Manager at Palomar Medical Center.

Stephen Anthony Forbes - Retail Service Manager

Stephen has worked for Palomar Health since 2005. He started at the downtown location working as a Food Service lead then a supervisor before being promoted to Retail Services Manager for all three campuses. He has an Associate of Science in Aviation and a Bachelor’s degree in Business from Northeastern University in Boston. He continues to hold his commercial/private  pilot’s license. His hospitality experience includes restaurants and Hyatt hotel in the Boston area as well as the La Costa Resort and Marriott of La Jolla prior to joining Palomar Health.  When not working, he can be found flying, playing the guitar and spending time on the golf course.

Margaret Mertens ,MS, RD,  Clinical Nutrition Manager

Margaret has been working in healthcare for more than 30 years and has received a Masters of Nutritional Science degree from San Jose State University.  Her internship was completed at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose, California. She has worked for Palomar Health since 2002 as a clinical dietitian for the acute care and skilled nursing facilities. She is a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the Clinical Nutrition Managers Practice Group. Her current position is the Clinical Nutrition Manager for all 3 campuses.

Kalani Smith - Palomar Medical Center

Kalani Smith brings over 16 years of experience to the position of Food Production Manager. A San Diego native and son of a chef working in his father’s restaurant learning the trade, he was inspired to continue his culinary education. He graduated from the College of Food San Diego and the Culinary Academy of San Fransisco.  Kalani has toured Europe and Australia developing his advanced culinary skills with international cuisine. Kalani has worked for many country clubs, Hotels and private clients to include First Lady Betty Ford, The Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club, The Westin of Pasadena and the Sheraton Keauhou Kailua, in Kona , Hawaii. His most recent position as working at Stone Brewing World Bistro and Gardens showcasing his long time support of organic and locally sourced produce and ingredients.

Supervisors

Barbara Dennis - Patient Services Supervisor

Barbara joined the Palomar Health FANS Department in July 2004. Barbara oversees the supervision of the Nutrition Care Assistants (NCA) at both Palomar Medical Center (Call Center & Host/Hostess), and Palomar Health Downtown Campus. Additionally she acts as a consultant for the NCA office at Pomerado Hospital. She is a nationally Certified Dietary Manager (CDM/CFPP) since 1986. She holds a Masters of Art in Counseling Psychology, and is a Licensed MFT Intern.  Additionally she holds national certifications as an Anger Management Spec-1, and Registered Addiction Specialist. During her spare time, she involves herself at her church by teaching a 10-month leadership class for women, overseeing the Nursing Home outreach and the annual Christmas Toy Program (with Toys for Tots) for more than 900 children.

Gelita Bain - Supervisor Patient Services

Gelita Bain has more than 20 years of successful managerial and leadership experience in Food Service, the last 10 years here with Palomar Health. She was instrumental in the opening of the new Palomar Medical Center and the new Patient Room Service.. A highly dedicated and contributing individual who is known for going above and beyond the regular duties dedicates the time and effort necessary to achieve results and patient satisfaction.

Dieticians

Sharavati Damle, MS, RD - Clinical Nutrition Specialist - Palomar Medical Center

Sharavati has worked at Palomar Continuing Care since 2008 as a long-term care dietitian. She has worked as a dietitian in health care since 1994. She has worked as a consulting dietitian at other long-term care facilities and for hospice. She also had experience in critical care and general clinical nutrition. she received her bachelor's degreen in food and nutrition and her master's degree in clinical dietetics from Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda, India. She completed her dietitic internship at VA Medical Center, San Diego.

Selene Caputo, M.S., R.D. - Registered Dietician

Selene’s areas of interest and specialty are consulting for SNF, MNT in renal, oncology and Critical Care. She received her Bachelor of Science and Masters of Science degrees and completed her Dietetic Internship in Foods & Nutrition at the University of the Philippines in Manila.

Debbie Aitkenhead, R.D., C.L.E. - Registered Dietician

Debbie’s interests and areas of specialty are breastfeeding advocacy, preventative nutrition, and motivation for lifestyle improvements. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Foods and Nutrition from Queens College and completed her Dietetic Internship at Presbyterian Medical Center in Dallas.

Susie Almond, R.D., C.N.S.D. - Registered Dietician

Susie received her Bachelor of Science degree in Dietetics from Cal Poly State University and completed her Dietetic Internship at UCLA. Her interests and areas of specialty are Critical Care and developmental disabilities. She spent 25 years as a Public Health Program Director.

Maria Cordero, R.D. - Registered Dietician

Maria enjoys her role as Foodservice Supervisor and in general clinical MNT. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Foods and Nutrition and completed her Dietetic Internship at St. Scholastica College, Manila, Philippines.

Marilyn Swift, M.S.,R.D., C.N.S.D. - Registered Dietician

Marilyn’s areas of specialty are critical care, diabetes, and general clinical nutrition. She graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Science degree in Household Economics, specializing in Foods and Nutrition. She completed her Dietetic Internship at the University of Alberta Hospital and received her Masters degree in Nutritional Sciences at San Diego State University.

Susan Vittek, R.D., C.D.E. - Registered Dietician

Susan’s specialty areas are critical care, diabetes, and general clinical nutrition. She graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Science degree in Food Science and Nutrition and completed a coordinated program at University and Hennepin County Medical center for eligibility and competency for Registered Dietitian.

Janet Liu, R.D., C.N.S.D. - Registered Dietician

Janet has been with Palomar Health since 1998 and divides her time at Pomerado Hospital between the Intensive Care Unit, the IMC and the 3rd floor. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Dietetics and a BBA in Business at University of Wisconsin – Madison. She completed her Dietetic Internship at Porterville State Hospital in California.

Virginia Ruble, R.D. - Registered Dietician

Virginia has been a Clinical Dietitian at Pomerado Hospital since 2004. Virginia completed her bachelor's degree in Foods and Nutrition from San Diego State University in 2003, and finished her supervised practice program in dietetics at SDSU in 2004. Virginia was raised in Williamstown, Massachusetts, and finished high school in San Diego. Virginia enjoys spending her personal time traveling and spending time with her husband and daughter, Nikki. Her hobbies include baking, sewing, college football, and  movies.

Eva Chin, R.D. - Clinical Dietician

Eva received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Dietetics and completed her Dietetic Internship at San Francisco State University.

Chelsey Harrison, R.D. - Clinical Dietician

Chelsey received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Dietetics and Food Administration, and completed her Dietetic Internship at California State University Long Beach.

Marisa McBride, R.D. - Clinical Dietician

Marisa specializes in geriatric nutrition with additional interests in wound care, diabetes and nutrition support. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Clinical Nutrition from the University of California at Davis, and completed her Dietetic Internship at Loma Linda University.

Emily Nulton - Dieitian - Palomar Medical Center

Emily has been a Clinical Dietitian at Palomar Health since August 2013 and also currently works as a consultant in long-term care. Emily was raised in the Boston area and moved to San Diego in 2004. She completed her dietetic internship through Iowa State University Distance Internship program and received her Master's degree in Nutritional Sciences from San Diego State University in 2010. Emily also received her Bachelor's degree in Communication from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 2000. Specialty interests include nutrition education/counseling, diabetes management, renal and geriatric nutrition.
