Surgical/Family Waiting Room

“I have been a volunteer at Palomar Health in the Surgery Waiting department for almost five years and enjoy meeting our patients and visitors and helping to make their experience the best it can be. And I work with an awesome group of volunteers and nurses. We are like family.“

  • Greets patients, family members and others arriving in the surgery or family waiting area introducing yourself as volunteer (name).
  • Explains in general terms what is expected.
  • Asks for general contact information to be shared with the nurse liaison and staff.
  • Uses the schedule to record phone numbers, contact information, and the room number the patient is assigned to.
  • Call the appropriate department and announces the patient’s check-in.
  • Escorts the patient and family members to appropriate department when directed to do so by the nurse.
  • Explain to the family members how they can track the progress of the patient through the entire process utilizing the tracking board.
  • Communicates information with the RN liaison and utilizes her for specific questions regarding visitation of patient’s pre and post op, room assignments, plus more.
  • Presents a caring and professional attitude to everyone including vendors, physicians, drivers, and anyone who comes to you for assistance.
  • Possess the maturity and interpersonal skills to cordially interact with patients, staff, volunteers and other customers of Palomar Medical Center.
  • Excellent communication skills for customer service and phone answering.
  • Be able to sit for moderate periods as well as walk the hallways and lobby areas without difficulty.
  • Volunteers must be flexible and possess problem-solving skills as well as be able to handle stressful situations.
  • Volunteers must maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
