Both facilities utilize decentralized medication dispensing cabinets, and the inpatient pharmacies are open 24-hours/day. Pharmacists are decentralized on the nursing units for order-entry, provision of drug information, and clinical services. Clinical services include pharmacokinetics, anticoagulation management, total parenteral nutrition, renal dosing, antibiotic utilization evaluation, and investigational drugs. Both facilities are teaching sites for the University of California San Diego, Keck Graduate Institute, University of the Pacific, and Loma Linda schools of pharmacy and offers a pharmacy residency program. Serving on a host of committees and several rounding teams, pharmacists are vital members of the healthcare team within Palomar Health.
