Inpatient Services

The Pharmacy Department provides comprehensive services at Palomar Medical Center Escondido and Palomar Medical Center Poway. Both facilities utilize decentralized medication dispensing cabinets, and the inpatient pharmacies are open 24-hours/day. Pharmacists are decentralized on the nursing units for order-entry, provision of drug information, and clinical services. Clinical services include pharmacokinetics, anticoagulation management, total parenteral nutrition, renal dosing, antibiotic utilization evaluation, and investigational drugs. Both facilities are teaching sites for the University of California San Diego, Keck Graduate Institute, University of the Pacific, and Loma Linda schools of pharmacy and offers a pharmacy residency program. Serving on a host of committees and several rounding teams, pharmacists are vital members of the healthcare team within Palomar Health.

Bioterrorism Response

Toolkit for implementation of employee antibiotic prophylaxis
In order to remain operational during a bioterrorist attack, hospitals must provide employees, physicians, and their families with antibiotic prophylaxis. This toolkit is the template of a procedure that can be adopted by hospital pharmacies in order to be prepared for such an event. (Published in AJHP)
