Calculating Your BMI (Body Mass Index) (American Dietetic Association)


Body Mass Index (BMI)

BMI stands for body mass index. This is a way to judge your body weight in relationship to your height. This index can provide some insight into weight management.

To Calculate BMI (adults)

Multiply your weight in pounds by 703. Divide that number by your height (in inches) squared (ie height x height). The ideal number should be between 20-25. If you are below, you may be underweight and if you are above, it may mean that you are overweight. It is important to remember that BMI is just a number. There are many other factors that need to be considered when judging how much you should weigh. Use BMI as a guide only.

According to the National Heart and Lung and Blood Institute, assessment of overweight involves three key measures:

  • Body Mass Index (BMI)
  • Waist circumference
  • Risk factors for diseases and conditions associated with obesity

Other risk factors:

  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • High LDL Cholesterol (bad cholesterol)
  • Low HDL Cholesterol (good cholesterol)
  • High triglycerides
  • High blood glucose (sugar)
  • Family history of premature heart disease
  • Physical inactivity
  • Cigarette smoking
