Palomar Health Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Centers treat all of the following:
Patients who have experienced trauma may benefit from Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy at the Palomar Health Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Centers. If the surgical site is not healing as expected or a skin graft or flap was used, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) has proven beneficial to salvaging the graft and healing the wound by destroying anaerobic bacteria and improving the body’s ability to heal. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy has an anti-bacterial effect. Anaerobic bacteria live inside areas where there is no oxygen. They do not have the ability to protect themselves from the action of oxygen. These bacteria are destroyed during HBOT treatments. If your body tissues do not get enough oxygen it is harder for your immune system to kill bacteria. Your body’s defenses against bacteria can actually be boosted during HBOT. This is why HBOT improves the body’s ability to accept the graft or flap.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy also helps your tissues to get enough oxygen. When your body tissues do not get enough oxygen it results in ischemia, a lack of oxygen to tissues. HBOT dissolves extra oxygen into the bloodstream. Oxygen supplied to the tissues is increased. This increase helps the body build up collagen. Collagen is a crucial part for tissue repair. The extra oxygen helps to breakdown many harmful products in the body. The extra oxygen increase body processes needed for healing, especially when a skin graft or flap is involved.
